Cana Bilir-Meier combines public archive material with personal documents in her essayistic films, photographs, texts, drawings and performances. By critically questioning the prevailing social narratives, her projects are concerned both with honouring resistant stories of life in migration and with making the continuity of racism visible. One aspect of her artistic-activist work is, among other things, maintaining the memory of her aunt Semra Ertan. Bilir-Meier not only made a film (2013) about the ‘guest worker’ and poet who died young, but also published the poetry collection My Name is Foreigner by Semra Ertan together with Zühal Bilir-Meier (2020). In the collaborative practice typical of Cana Bilir-Meier, the guests on the panel will once again approach the life and work of Semra Ertan from artistic, literary and musical perspectives.
